Let’s see what this wireless DeX is all about. It’s not finding anything. How the hell am I supposed to get this on my TV? So you’ve just got yourself a brand new Samsung phone, or you’ve just updated your current one to the new OneUI 2.5. You then see there’s this Samsung DeX icon, so you click on it, and you wait a few seconds, and wait a few more seconds, and you still have no compatible display found written on there. How on earth do you get yourself wireless DeX on your television?

Well, this is the video for you because I’m going to show you my ways to get Samsung DeX wirelessly on any television. Now, wireless DeX requires you to have one of the new Samsung TVs with built-in screen mirroring technology, or you need to have something with built-in Miracast support.

So the first thing on my list is something that a lot of people may have and may not know that it worked with, is the Amazon Fire TV. So this has actually got a built-in Miracast, which means that when you go into the menu, and you then click on screen mirroring, the Fire TV stick, or your Fire TV device, will actually show up in your list of compatible devices. Or you can buy yourself any other alternative Miracast dongle. So this is one of the best and cheapest ways of getting wireless DeX onto your TV without having to buy one of the new Samsung TVs.

Another way to do this is to turn your PC or your laptop into a Miracast receiver. So you just install an optional Windows feature of Wireless Display. And that will allow you to then set your Windows machine as a Miracast receiver, and then you can just turn it on, and it will become available in your list of devices for your wireless DeX.

So the Amazon Fire TV stick is one hell of a device. So I purchased it, and I’ve been in love with it ever since. It’s really simple. I think it’s better than the Chromecast, purely because I don’t have to use my phone to control it. It comes with an included remote to control the whole thing.

Now I found a little hack for this with Wireless DeX. So not only can I make, obviously, the Fire TV becomes a Miracast device, which allows you to then use Wireless DeX onto your TV, I’ve found a way to make everything portable. You can take your Fire TV stick with you, you can connect your Samsung DeX, wirelessly, to that Fire TV.

So if you are going on, let’s say, a holiday, or you’re going to a hotel, and you want to have Wireless DeX on your hotel TV, or you’ve gone to a place where you don’t have Wi-Fi, but you still want to get Wireless DeX onto your TV, then let me show you the device I bought to make this happen.

This is the RAVPower File Hub. Now what this thing does is it’s a portable power bank with a built-in router, wireless router. So it allows my phone to connect to the router, it allows the Fire TV to connect to the router, and because they’re all connected to the same router, the Fire TV is seen from Wireless DeX on my phone.

So this little package over here, look, this little package, I’m showing you exactly how I’ve set this up. All I’ve done is I have Velcroed my Fire TV stick to the File Hub. Then I have just got a small little wire that comes out of the File Hub into the Fire TV stick to provide it power, because it’s got a built-in power bank, and then I’ve just got a tiny little adapter on the front, which is just a HDMI coupler so that the actual Fire TV stick, I can have a wire plugged into it as opposed to plugging the Fire TV stick into a device.

So this is a nice little handy package for travel purposes especially. And then I’ve got Velcro on the front that allows me to stick the remote on there as well, so I don’t lose it.

Now this portable package allows me to take this with me anywhere. So imagine this scenario, I take it with me to a hotel room, I’ve got a nice TV there, all I have to do is plug a HDMI lead from here into the TV, and I’ve got myself wireless DeX. Using the RAVpower File Hub app, I can then connect to say the hotel Wi-Fi, and then that will turn this into a router for the Wi-Fi, so my Samsung DeX has got the internet, so has the Fire TV. I can use the Fire TV as normal, watch my Netflix, I can watch my Amazon Prime, I can watch YouTube, or I can cast my Samsung DeX with full internet access to this. And this is just an all-in-one solution.

Now the whole reason behind putting together this portable pack is so I can achieve the goal of having a completely wireless DeX solution. And I don’t mean connecting wirelessly to a TV that’s still tethered to a mains, I mean a completely wireless system where even the screen isn’t connected to anything. And I can move anywhere, I can sit anywhere, I can be on the tube, I can do whatever I want.

And the way I achieve this is by using this screen here, which I’ve previously done a review of, so you can catch that in a pull-out here, or I’ll leave a link in the description so that you can check out the review of this monitor and why I got it in the first place. So I’ve just got my little pack here, and I’ve just put on a little lead, which is HDMI to micro HDMI, because that’s the input on this screen. And this is literally just going to slide into this section here, because this has got a built-in stand and it’s disappeared as you can see, goes in there. And then when I connect this to this and I turn it on from the power, and I turn on the wireless, watch what’s going to happen, okay? It’s right here in front of you, watch what’s going to happen. Amazon, the Fire TV stick is being powered from here, the screen has its own built-in battery, so I don’t need to connect that to anything, and I can get about four hours of screen on time with this.

The Fire TV stick is working, so the Fire TV stick is now fired up, and I’m just going to go into the network settings to verify that this is now connected to the file hub. As you can see, it’s connected to the 5G network that’s on that file hub. If I go back and press the home button, I go into mirroring, and this is now ready for me to connect to the file hub 5G network from my phone. Then I bring up DeX, and there you go, look, you can see that I now have the Fire stick available to connect. I’m going to start casting. There you go, look, Samsung DeX, wirelessly, completely portable, nothing at all, no wires, no nothing needed, external. That’s it, this is the end game, the end goal that I wanted.

Now the only downside to this is that because my phone is connected to the file hub Wi-Fi, and then the Fire TV is also connected to the file hub Wi-Fi, if the file hub itself doesn’t have another network that has internet access to connect to, I’m not going to get internet access on this. But my use case scenario would be to have this on the train, or to have this on the underground where there isn’t a mobile network available anyway.

The only way that I can see this being fixed is if Samsung allows wireless DeX to work whilst you also have a wireless hotspot enabled. Then that way, I can use my 4G data to share with the hotspot, and then the Fire TV can connect directly to my phone. I don’t even need the RAVPower file hub in that scenario, but Samsung has actually disabled it. Whenever I try to, for example, connect the Fire TV to my hotspot, and then I try to fire up Samsung DeX wirelessly, it says that you can’t do it because hotspot is active.
